Before the movie Sideways was even a glimmer in the scriptwriter’s eye, Pinot Noir was a phenomenon. It was, and may still be, the grape responsible for the most coveted wines on the planet: the red wines of Burgundy. Burgundy has been the world’s Pinot Noir benchmark for eons. But, as is the way in the wine world, a bunch of unruly upstarts are challenging France’s perch at the top of the pile. The press has been heaping glory on Pinot Noir bottlings from California, Oregon, and New Zealand. Do these wines live up to all the fuss? Want to know what’s so special about Pinot Noir in the first place? This is the class for you. We’ll explore several examples of New World Pinot Noir, compare them to a bottling from Burgundy, and discuss some of the more important qualities of the grape variety.
